Don’t get scammed on the cost of your home deed

LUCAS COUNTY — It’s something you can get for less than five dollars, but a national company wants you to pay ten times the price.

We’re talking about home deeds, which you can get just by going downtown.

Many homeowners don’t even have one. Lucas County Recorder Jeanine Perry tells News 11, ”It’s a good thing, but it’s not necessary.”

It’s a deed — a document that provides proof of ownership. Perry says, “It’s a very good idea to have a copy of your deed.”

Seniors being scammed by fake cops

Chicago Police are warning seniors about a financial scam involving phony law enforcement officers.

In the scam, offenders call victims saying they are in law enforcement, such as a Chicago Police officer or FBI agent, according to a release from Belmont Area detectives.

Various ruses are uses such as asking the victim’s assistance in helping catch counterfeiters who have scammed one of the victims’ relatives. They ask the victim to provide serial numbers of U.S. currency they are in possession of. Offenders also claim someone is using the victim’s credit cards and ask the victim to participate in a sting operation, the release said.

85-year-old Ida Madou was home alone when a man came to her door claiming his father’s business redid her roof a few years ago. She let the man in her home to check for possible leaks and left.

A few hours later, her son came to check on her. He noticed a safe, that had been in the basement for more than 20-years was gone.

So were memories of her husband, who died in 2002. The safe contains two annual sets, of Canadian and U.S. mint coins from the early 70’s and 80’s, other foreign currency that were purchased and collected by her late husband.
